What we have done and what you can do:
The Society for Educational Scholarship has:
Notified local and national press
Set up this website
Set up a graduate student e-mailing list for quick communications
Notified over 3,000 alumni via letter
Met with Dean Saller and Dean Stein on October 10
Completed a student statement that we have circulated to all
of the Social Sciences faculty
Met with President Sonnenschein and Provost Stone on November 11
Alumni and other friends of the department have:
Circulated petitions and letters
which they have sent to
university officials
Sent letters of support to us
What can you do?
Stay informed; read all of the news articles included here and check back frequently for more
information
Make your voice heard! Write to university officials and
newspapers, and
encourage like-minded colleagues to do the same. Group letters from alumni and professional
associations may have more impact, though all letters are important and welcome.
Send a copy of any letter you write to The Society for Educational
Scholarship so we can build a file of letters demonstrating support.
If you know any faculty in the Social Sciences division, contact
them and present the case for education research before the November 13 vote.
If you have any contacts in the foundation or business communities, encourage them to help
influence the decision.
Take a look at the website for The University of Rochester Mathematics
Department. Last year, their department was set to be cut back, and they successfully fought
to save their graduate program in mathematics. The situation is not exactly parallel, but it is worth
examining.
